Peru is divided into three very well defined areas: the Coast, the Andes and the Jungle (Amazonia), so during the same period of time you can find different climates;

  • On the Peruvian coast: The hottest months are from December to February, it is generally between 25 and 30 degrees. During the coldest months that are from June to August the temperature can vary between 15 and 20 degrees.

  • Los Andes: From December to April the temperature fluctuates between 18 and 25 degrees, but most nights are a little cooler and rain is frequent, especially between February and March. June to October is the dry season, so you can enjoy mild and sunny weather!

  • La Selva: As in the Andes, from December to April is the rainy season, but from June to August it is the dry season, the climate is very beautiful and hot.

Languages

Peru has three official languages: Spanish, Quechua and Aymara. Spanish is the most spoken language (over 80% of the population)

As an indication, here is what certain products or services of daily life will cost you:

  • Restaurants: Prepare your palate, you will eat very well in Peru! Depending on what you are looking for, there are several options available to you. Menus: You will find them everywhere, they are small, very simple family restaurants, where you can taste the best local Peruvian dishes. Between 10 and 14 soles (between 2.5 and 4 euros). Gourmet restaurants: Peru has become the new hotspot for global gastronomy with some of its restaurants being among the best referenced worldwide. This time, you will have to book well in advance and pay a hundred euros. Among them we can cite the Central restaurant or Astrid y Gaston.

  • A bottle of water: 2 soles for a small bottle and 5 for a large one, then between 0.5 and 1.3 euros.

  • A local beer of 0.50 L: 8 soles or 2 euros

Tip

In Peru, the tip is not obligatory, however it is customary to leave a few coins at the end of your meal in a restaurant, according to your satisfaction of course. During your trip you will have the opportunity to meet several local guides, with whom you will spend one or more days, in which case it is recommended to pay them between 7 to 10 soles per day and per person at the end of his service. In the same way you will have to use private transport with your own driver, it is also customary to tip them when leaving them!

As in Peru the climate can vary from one region to another.

  • For example during your excursion in the Salar de Uyuni the nights can be cool, the temperatures can vary between 10 and 15 degrees, except between June and September when they vary between 4 and 12 degrees. Between December and April, it is the rainy season and the Salar can be flooded, therefore not very accessible.

  • In La Paz the temperatures are rather cool throughout the year, they are around 11 degrees.

  • On the other hand In Copacabana (Peruvian border) and in Amazonia the temperatures are between 20 and 25 degrees. this is why it is very important to pack your suitcase accordingly! So make a place for your sweater and your socks next to your shorts and T-shirts, they will be very useful to you!

Bolivia is a country with 37 official languages! The most widely spoken are Spanish, Quechua and Aymara, but the others are also very present in the country!

Bolivia is one of the most affordable countries in South America for travel. As an indication here is the price of some products of daily life:

  • Meals in a medium standing restaurant 100 Bolivianos depending on the region (around 13 euros) for a full meal.

  • A 2L water bottle : 5 Bolivianos (around 0.60 cents)

  • A local beer: 15 bolivianos (around 1.9 euros)

Tip

In Bolivia, tipping is not compulsory, however it is customary to leave around 10% of the bill in a restaurant if, of course, you have found the service particularly pleasant. For drivers and guides, you can count 1 USD per day if you are satisfied with their services.

Chile, like other South American countries, has a great diversity of climates on its soil.

  • The north of the country is desert and more temperate while the south bathes in a highly humid and cold oceanic polar climate.

  • In central Chile, you will find a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters. The seasons are completely reversed compared to Europe. Once again, if you are visiting the whole country, you must have everything in your suitcase, sweaters and coats like shorts and t-shirts!

Ecuador has a tropical climate that varies by region and altitude. The weather remains very pleasant, like a kind of perpetual spring. We can however distinguish 2 seasons:

  • the dry season from April to December: temperatures are cooler especially in the Andes because it is the dry season.

  • the rainy season: from January to April. Like Peru, the climate is very variable depending on the location.

  • In the Amazon, there is a tropical climate: humid and hot (between 20 ° and 30 °).

  • In the Andes, the climate is dry (9 to 20 ° and cool nights). On the coast and in the Galapagos, the climate is milder ranging from 20 to 35 °.

Colombia has an Ecuadorian climate. We can distinguish two seasons:

  • The dry season which extends from December to March.

  • The wet season during which it can rain, which extends from June to October. The climate, however, like its neighbors, can vary depending on the region and altitude. In the plains and up to about 1000m above sea level, it is hot all year round. If you go up to altitude, the temperatures are cooler.

Tip

In Cuba, almost always, a 10% service charge is already included in a restaurant bill, so tip is not mandatory. However, the staff expect the customer to leave a little more money. For guides and drivers there is no fixed rule, you can leave the amount you consider depending on the quality of the service, the equivalent of 2 or 3 euros is good. If you take a taxi with a timer, 10% of the fare is expected, unless a price has been previously agreed. For musicians in squares or restaurants you will leave what you consider, no rule is imposed. In the toilets there is usually a cleaning agent - keeper, remember to leave more or less 0.25 euros.
