Day 10

COMETS OF REMEDIES

In Cuba, the kite is a tradition. All Cubans, young and old, know how to make and fly the "kite". It was introduced 150 years ago by Chinese immigration. It was a real flying fight, as razor blades were hung along the strings to cut through the opponent's. Today, the art of making a kite is as important as flying it. The American blockade made it difficult to acquire the raw material, the Cubans redoubled their inventiveness to create the instrument. The kite's sails are decorated with patterns in contrasting colors, so anyone can identify it from a distance. In Remedios, it is in the workshop of the Christmas Parrandas that the kite tradition acquires all its breadth. Children make their kites under the watchful eye of José, then on the hill the kite running can begin: who will fly higher or faster? although often the main opponent is the wind.
